Blue Laser presentation Pointers are Finally Here !!

After stagnation of innovation the Handheld Laser Pointer Market for some years it looks like we have a couple of years of vast growth and innovation. The last ten years have seen prices of amazing little RED Laser pointer (670nm) decrease from ?80 to under ?5  ..at that time hand held Green Laser Pointer (532nm) were entering the market at almost ?1000 each but production Increased as they are the most useful colour as green is brightest of available colours. During Sept 2004 Yellow Laser pointers (593.5 nm) launched to the market @ ?449 , a reasonable price for such an Innovation in colour but worldwide volumes have been slow and their has been trade price increases which may ultimately result in Increases in retail prices for yellow laser during the period 05/06 as the manufactuers try to recoup their investment with margin since the volume does not seem to be appearing.

The reasons we at bluesky believe the take off of yellow laser pointers has been slow ,is the hope of decreases in prices like in Green Laser Prices but it must be remembered that those prices decreases took place over a period of years not months . Also a lot of talk of the introduction of blue lasers ( Sony blue ray - see below ) but nothing happening for 18 months and possibly that there is a real increase in visability with Green over red but the increase in Yellow over Green is only marginal.

SO whats the big Excitement ,. well for the first time anywhere in Europe we can offer you a handheld , battery powered laser pointer thats produces BLUE LIGHT ( 460nm ), these are very exclusive and VERY unique

To get blue laser light first you need an infrared laser which pumps a crystal ,this in turn pumps another crystal , which pumps another crystal, in order to get blue light at our our eyes peak sensitivity of 473nm , Because the optics used for generation of blue laser light are less efficient and more expensive than those used for green, blue laser diodes are still expensive but hey ! at least they are available !!

GREEN LASER POINTER : Due to price only decreasing to reasonable market levels ( Ie < ?100 ) in the last 18 months and also know the market well and the manufactuers well we guess less than 10,000 units sold in UK
YELLOW LASER POINTER : We are aware of less than 5 sales points in Uk and knowing the manufactuer we guess less than 300 units of Yellow Laser pointer are in UK , priced increased during 08 due to no other markets to increase volume.
BLUE LASER POINTER  ( 473nm ):Launched in late 05 , very exlusive as very little volume

SO WHY ?? Is BLUE & Yellow Diodes so expensive ?

A Lttle History on Blue Diode Laser

It was 1997 when Nichia announced it had created the holy grail of laser light ~ Blue 473nm Light ~ well a commercial version anyway , it was available for about a year before but creating a Blue laser with a burn time of 10k hours plus was the holy grail as it was then considered commercial.

I HIGHLY recommend a quick read over the article linked below (< 10 mins) as it is an interview with Shuji Nakamura the Inventor of Blue laser Diodes who after a history of failure in his company which included 10 years wasted on uncommercial products YES TEN YEARS !! He by accident when trying to invent a blue LED going down a research path that other scientist were avoiding !!! he stumbled across Blue Laser Light !

If you read this article it will make it clearer why blue laser light was the holy grail for many years and why it was so hard to acheive , and why if you want a blue laser it will currently cost substiantially more than Red,Green and Yellow.

In a 593.5nm yellow DPSS laser (pointer or larger size), there''s a BIG infrared laser diode that generates laser light at 808nm, this is fired into a crystal containing the rare-earth element neodymium. This crystal takes the 808nm infrared laser light and lases at 1,064 and 1,342nm (yes, deeper in the infrared!). This laser light comes out of the NdYV04 (neodymium yttrium vanadium oxide) crystal and is then shot into a second crystal (containing potassium, titanium, & phosphorus, usually called KTP) that roughly doubles the frequency to 593.5nm - the bright orangish yellow color you see. This light is then collimated (focused) by a lens and emerges out the laser''s business end. Just before the lens, there''s a filter that removes any stray IR (infrared) rays from the pump diode and the neodymium crystal. You don''t want that stuff in your yellow beam, trust me. :-)

This is why blue & Yellow diode lasers are so much more expensive than red ones. Lots of itty bitty parts, and they all need to be very carefully aligned by hand. If the polarisation is off, one or both crystals need to be turned.
With red diode lasers, you just slap in the diode and slap a lens in front of it.
